Keep the sheet whole
Max June Kim wants a digital version of an A3 ink drawing for portfolio work. The loose sheet has a 10 mm blank outer border, and the original is to stay whole. The refurbished laptop still does its job, so Max wants to keep it in the plan.
The Canon CanoScan LiDE 400 lists a Letter/A4 capture area. Its Windows manual adds a useful detail: IJ Scan Utility has an A3 (A4 x2) setting in Image Stitch. Scan one section of the drawing, reposition the sheet for the other, then combine the captures into one saved image.
That gives Max a way to choose the smaller scanner while keeping the paper intact. It also adds work on the laptop. The utility allows the images to be moved and rotated, with cropping if needed. Max will need to inspect the join and rescan where necessary. An invisible join or precise color reproduction is not promised.
Make room for both positions
The drawing will need stable horizontal support along with the scanner while it is repositioned. Max must find a place that keeps the passage and shared meal surface available. A dry, flat, loose sheet is the material in this plan. The included upright stand does not make this an upright large-sheet setup.
For the specified-size scan, each section goes face-down at the alignment mark. Canon identifies strips that cannot be scanned: 2.4 mm at the left platen edge and 2.7 mm at the front. Those exclusions matter in each placement. Max’s blank outer border keeps artwork away from the paper’s outside edges, with the central join still needing inspection.
Close the cover according to the instructions without forcing the paper or glass. Canon prohibits a load or pressure of 2 kg or more on the glass. The need to lay out the whole sheet remains part of the choice, even though only one section is captured at a time.
Max’s laptop runs Windows 11 x64, has an available USB-A 3.0 port and permits software installation. Current Canon US support lists the LiDE 400 driver 1.01 with ScanGear and IJ Scan Utility for Windows 11. The supplied cable connects USB-A at the powered laptop to USB-C at the scanner, carrying data and power. There is no separate AC adapter to add.
The US package includes the scanner, that cable, a setup CD and the clip-on stand. On October 5, 2026, the new LiDE 400 offer was $89.99, shipped and sold by Amazon. Max will check tax and shipping against the $240 budget before ordering.
Max chooses the LiDE 400 for the two-part workflow, with the alignment work kept in the plan and the original drawing left whole. The new part of the routine will be moving the sheet and checking how the two captures meet.
When this does not matter
Your existing capture method already meets the project’s needs, or the entire original fits within one capture area.
The practical fix
- Confirm the US CanoScan LiDE 400 package includes the supplied USB-A-to-USB-C cable, and check the final total. The observed new price was $89.99, shipped and sold by Amazon, before the final charges that must fit Max’s $240 budget.
- Use the supported Windows 11 x64 laptop with an available USB-A 3.0 port, internet access and installation permission. Follow Canon’s current setup instructions to install the scanner driver and IJ Scan Utility. Release the scanner lock as instructed, then connect the supplied cable directly to the powered computer. Keep the cable with the scanner.
- Provide stable horizontal support for the scanner and whole loose, dry drawing during both placements. Keep household passages and shared meal use clear. Max’s drawing has a 10 mm blank outer border. Place each section face-down at the specified alignment mark, allowing for the unscannable 2.4 mm left and 2.7 mm front strips. Close the cover without forcing it. Do not apply a load or pressure of 2 kg or more to the glass.
- Select A3 (A4 x2) in Image Stitch. Scan the first section, reposition the whole original and scan the second. Inspect the images, adjust position and rotation, crop if needed and save the combined image. Rescan if necessary.
- Disconnect USB before cleaning. Use a soft cloth, avoid rough paper, solvents and direct spray, and remove moisture thoroughly. If an operating-system upgrade leaves the scanner button unable to scan, Canon advises reinstalling the driver.
This applies if…
- You want one digital image of a larger loose drawing and can accept two placements, a supported computer setup and on-screen adjustment.
The answer changes if…
- You need a single full-area capture, artwork reaches the excluded edges, or the original cannot lie flat safely for both scans.
- Your host cannot run the exact utility, or composite adjustment is unsuitable for the job.

What to check in your own setup
- Two-part capture does not enlarge the glass or provide a single A3 pass.
- An invisible join, exact color reproduction, professional print quality and time savings are not established.
- This plan covers a loose, dry, flat drawing with blank outer margins. It does not establish edge-to-edge reproduction, bound-original handling or textured-painting suitability.
