The loose stack has its own entrance

Sixty sheets sit together after Wren’s weekly ledger work. They are loose working duplicates, already authorized for destruction. The records that must stay are elsewhere. What interests Wren is being able to load this ordinary paper as a stack.

Another machine is a harder sell. Wren already has a laptop and printer and dislikes adding things that need a permanent home. An automatic tray has to be useful enough to earn that space.

The Fellowes AutoMax 100M gives the preference a specific shape. Its automatic tray accepts up to 100 sheets, while its manual slot accepts up to 10. Those figures describe two ways of feeding the same machine. The ratings use US Letter 20 lb paper on the 120 V model, and paper and operating conditions can reduce capacity. Wren’s planned sixty-sheet stack uses that paper.

The material list needs the same care. Staples, small paper clips and plastic cards are allowed through manual feed only. The automatic stack must stay free of those items. Adhesive labels, newspaper, cardboard, folders and laminates are among the materials the instructions exclude altogether.

That makes the US 100M, part 4629001, a reasonable choice for Wren’s loose-paper batch. There is also a separate bottle to include: Fellowes 35250 oil. The manual calls for oiling when the bin is emptied, using non-aerosol vegetable oil in a long-nozzle bottle, and names 35250 as an example.

A place for it, and a ceiling on the bill

The household has agreed on a suitable indoor position with room to use the tray and empty the bin. It keeps the machine away from children, pets, heat and water, beside an accessible grounded outlet matching its rating. The instructions rule out an extension cord, transformer or converter.

Ownership also means emptying and closing the bin, keeping the openings clear and following the oiling instructions. The maximum continuous run is 15 minutes, followed by a 35-minute cooldown if that limit is exceeded. Automatic feeding still comes with a routine to learn.

At the October 5, 2026 check, the new Amazon offers were $269 for the shredder and $7.49 for one 12 fl oz bottle of 35250 oil. Together they came to $276.49 before final charges. Wren’s $280 budget leaves only $3.51 for anything added at checkout. The subtotal cannot settle the purchase.

Wren settles on the 100M and oil together, provided the actual final bill stays within $280. If it goes over, the purchase waits and the current authorized disposal arrangement continues. The loose stack still needs handling on Friday.

When this does not matter

Your current disposal arrangement already suits you, or suitable small manual feeds meet your needs without another stack-loading machine.

The practical fix

  1. For loose Letter 20 lb paper, distinguish the 100-sheet automatic tray from the 10-sheet manual slot. Actual conditions can reduce those capacities. Keep fasteners and cards out of the automatic stack and exclude unsupported materials.
  2. Choose the US AutoMax 100M 4629001 and include suitable separate oil, such as the single 12 fl oz Fellowes 35250 bottle. Check the final combined cost, including any charges. For Wren, more than $280 means deferring the purchase.
  3. Use an agreed indoor position away from children, pets, heat and water, with tray and bin access and a nearby accessible grounded outlet matching 120 V / 60 Hz, 3.5 A. Use no extension, transformer or converter.
  4. Follow the manual to fit the casters, extend the automatic tray, load paper and start. Keep the bin closed. Never move the machine by the tray extension, and keep hands, hair and loose objects clear of the openings and exposed blades.
  5. Empty the bin as needed and oil as directed when emptying it. Respect the 15-minute continuous-operation maximum and 35-minute cooldown if exceeded. Unplug before cleaning or service, and switch off or unplug when unused.

This applies if…

  • You have eligible loose paper in batches and value loading a stack enough to accept the machine’s space, cost and maintenance.

The answer changes if…

  • Your papers are fastened or contain excluded materials, the required power or safe position is unavailable, or the final complete cost exceeds your budget.

What to check in your own setup
  • The two capacities apply to the specified US model and paper conditions. Automatic feeding does not establish a jam-free run, lower noise, time saved or safe unattended use.
  • This choice concerns paper already authorized for destruction. It does not decide record-retention duties or promise confidentiality or identity-theft prevention.
  • Prices were checked on October 5, 2026 and can change. Final charges, delivery and a completed purchase remain unknown.
