A pen in hand, a command underfoot
The pen hovers over Cass’s pickup list while a local chapter plays through wired headphones. Cass marks notes on paper during dialogue work, with chapter files due Thursday at four. For these listening sessions, a foot-operated pause would let the pen stay in hand.
The laptop’s keyboard already does the job. Cass likes substantial physical controls, though adding an object under the desk cuts against a preference for owning fewer things. A pedal needs a clear role: pause and resume the chapter while Audacity stays on screen.
In Audacity 4, P is Play/Pause. Space is Play/Stop. Elgato’s System Hotkey action can send a chosen key when tapped, so Cass’s plan is to assign P to one pedal and keep the free Stream Deck app running.
The active window matters. Cass’s paper notes leave Audacity in focus. Typing into another application would change that setup. The P shortcut must still have its normal assignment, with no text-entry field active and no competing shortcut intercepting it. This is a discrete tap command, with no promise that holding the pedal keeps playback running or that releasing it stops playback.
Check both ends of the included cable
Cass’s retained Windows 11 x86_64 laptop has a free native USB-C data port and a local Audacity 4.0.1 project on internal storage. The current US Stream Deck Pedal, model 10GBF9901, has three configurable pedals. Elgato lists a 250 cm USB-C to USB-C cable in its current box, along with spring sets and stoppers.
Before ordering, Cass needs confirmation that the offered package contains that C-to-C cable. The Amazon listing identifies the exact model but calls the lead only a USB cable, while an older Elgato setup guide describes a different cable. The proposed connection uses the current C-to-C package directly, without a hub, extension or adapter.
There is a clear planned position beside the chair, within cable reach and out of the shared passage. Cass can begin with the default springs. Optional pressure adjustment needs the documented Phillips screwdriver, and it would not establish that the pedal feels right for a whole editing session.
Keep the keyboard as an option
The October 5, 2026 Amazon check showed a new 10GBF9901 package at $79.99, shipped and sold by Amazon. Cass’s budget is $260, with the final total still to check. This plan needs no new headphones, computer, audio interface or paid plugin.
Cass chooses the pedal setup for the paper-note sessions, once the current cable package and complete cost are confirmed. A permitted trial would suit Cass’s preference for borrowing before committing, if one becomes available. Until then, the keyboard stays in reach beside the pickup sheet.
When this does not matter
The working keyboard or mouse already suits your playback routine and moving that command to your foot adds little.
The practical fix
- For this route, use a supported Windows 11 x86_64 laptop with a free native USB-C data port and the local Audacity 4.0.1 project. Keep the existing wired headphones.
- Confirm before ordering that the offered 10GBF9901 package includes the current 250 cm USB-C to USB-C cable. Check the final cost against your budget. Cass’s ceiling is $260. Connect directly, without a hub, extension or adapter.
- Install the free Stream Deck software with permission and leave it running. Assign System Hotkey P to one pedal. In Audacity 4, P is Play/Pause and Space is Play/Stop.
- Keep Audacity active, with no text-entry field active, the normal P shortcut unchanged and no other app intercepting it. Check the ordinary keyboard command and pedal mapping before relying on them. Use discrete taps.
- Keep the pedal and cable clear of passage and within the supplied cable’s reach. The default spring setup is enough for this plan. Retain keyboard controls, and consider a permitted trial if one is available.
This applies if…
- You prefer paper pickup notes and want a discrete foot tap for Play/Pause while Audacity remains active on the supported setup.
The answer changes if…
- Your software version, shortcut or host connection differs, you type notes in another application, or you need playback to follow a held pedal rather than discrete taps.

What to check in your own setup
- This is a route for foreground Audacity 4.0.1 on the stated Windows host. It does not establish control of another app, global background operation or a dedicated Audacity plugin.
- Held-pedal playback and stopping on release are outside this choice. No faster editing, physical relief, better audio or finished chapter is promised.
- The retail observation did not identify cable ends. Confirm the current offered package before purchase. Prices and availability can change, and final charges were not checked.
