Choose the surface before the drawing
Cass had a drawing in mind before she had picked the mugs. A small geometric motif, two new mugs, something personal to plan on an October rest day. She liked having favorite mugs within reach and regularly hosted small hobby gatherings.
She often bought used when she knew which pieces were missing. A plain secondhand mug looked like a reasonable place to start. Yet a mug’s ordinary ceramic finish told her very little about whether it could receive this kind of ink.
Cricut specifies a poly-coated, sublimation-compatible blank with a smooth, straight pressing area. White color alone cannot establish that coating. Cass chose Cricut’s 2007821 pair, two white 12 oz / 340 ml blanks intended for Mug Press and Infusible Ink. A third-party blank would need its own coating and shape checked.
The drawing starts on paper
Cass already had an activated North American Mug Press, its correct cord and a suitable power supply. A first-use press needs activation with a compatible computer and USB connection, though a computer need not stay connected for each pressing session.
For this simple freehand design, she could use her Infusible Ink markers on regular laser copy paper. The paper carries the drawing to the mug. Drawing directly on the ceramic is not this method. Mirror text or an asymmetrical design when its direction matters. No cutter, printer or subscription is needed for her original hand drawing.
She also had unused butcher paper, heat-resistant tape, scissors, a lint roller and a heat-resistant cooling mat. Lint-clean the blank, secure the design flat within the straight pressing area and keep it at least half an inch from the handle. The marker method needs three layers of butcher paper, secured with heat-resistant tape and trimmed of excess. Cardstock does not belong in this Mug Press setup.
Follow the Mug Press marker-project instructions, seating the mug fully on its base, right side up. Use a stable, suitable surface in a well-ventilated indoor area. The press and mug become hot. Avoid hot surfaces and let the mug cool completely on the heat-resistant mat before handling the transfer. Cass, Silas and Amal had agreed to leave the work area undisturbed.
A pair for this project
The new, one-time Amazon offer for the exact 2007821 pair was $7.99 when checked on October 5, 2026. Cass would check tax and shipping against her $80 personal limit before ordering. That item price covered the blanks. Her press and transfer supplies were already owned.
She chose the coated pair for the drawing and left her favorite drinking mugs out of the project. They could stay in ordinary use while she worked out the small design she wanted to make.
When this does not matter
You want an ordinary drinking mug and will leave it undecorated.
The practical fix
- For this Mug Press and Infusible Ink project, choose the white 12 oz Cricut 2007821 two-pack. Check the exact size and pack before ordering.
- Have the activated press, correct power setup and complete marker supplies described above. Draw on laser copy paper and preserve the placement and three-layer protection requirements.
- Follow the marker-project instructions in a stable, ventilated work area. Keep hot work undisturbed and allow complete cooling before handling the transfer.
- Check the final price including tax and shipping. Cass’s personal limit is $80.
This applies if…
- You own a working, activated North American Mug Press and want compatible blanks for an Infusible Ink project with the required supplies.
The answer changes if…
- You must decorate a particular existing mug, use another transfer technology, or lack the separate press and supplies.
- A third-party blank has its own verified coating, dimensions and process support.
