A working copy needs room to change

Sage Ellis Lee wants to bind a personal rehearsal copy without treating its contents as final. A revised page should be able to replace the old one, and the pack should fold back while being read. The loose sheets already have a folder. Choosing a binding is about how Sage wants to use that working copy.

Wednesday rehearsal packs are part of Sage’s week. Tuesday has a half-hour diary slot for preparing them, alongside the other work of arranging scores and confirming rooms. Sage reads the manual before buying equipment, and the ProClick instructions make one distinction worth stopping over: the punch makes the holes, while a separate spine holds the pages.

The GBC ProClick P50, model 2515650, punches Letter paper for ProClick binding. Pair it with the black half-inch 2515660 spines, sold as a pack of 25. Those spines can be opened and closed by hand, with a finger or pen used to open them for page changes. They also allow the pages to turn through 360 degrees. Sage can choose a binding that folds back and still permits a page to be replaced.

Replacement sheets need the matching ProClick hole pattern too. Buying the spines alone would leave Sage’s ordinary unpunched sheets without the necessary preparation. This choice includes both the punch and the separate spine pack, without relying on sample spines or an editing tool being in the box.

Twenty-four sheets, in small batches

Sage’s planned copy contains 24 sheets of ordinary Letter-size 20 lb paper, including a plain paper title sheet. The P50 takes up to six of those sheets per punch batch. The half-inch spine’s 85-sheet rating describes the finished document capacity. It does not allow 85 sheets to go through the punch at once. Later additions have to stay within that spine limit.

The manual calls for a stable surface, correctly aligned sheets against the guide and a sliding punch action. The waste container needs periodic emptying. Thick, plastic or laminated covers would need a separate check of suitable media and capacity. Sage’s paper title sheet keeps this particular choice within the ordinary-paper instructions. Manual punching remains part of the job.

On October 5, 2026, the selected new punch was listed at $137.43 and the separate spine pack at $26.89, both shipped and sold by Amazon. Together that was $164.32 before final charges. Sage’s budget is $310. Availability, the final total and room to operate and store the punch still need checking before an order. Shared space also needs household agreement.

That is the system Sage chooses for the personal working copy, provided those checks fit. The existing folder stays in use until both items are ready. Sage’s reason for choosing them is the next revision: the working copy should have a way to let an old page go.

When this does not matter

Your existing folder or suitable binder already meets your reading and page-changing needs.

The practical fix

  1. Choose the complete pair: GBC ProClick P50 2515650 and separate 2515660 half-inch black ProClick spines, 25 pack.
  2. For this paper route, use US Letter 20 lb sheets, including any plain paper title sheet. Punch no more than six at once and keep the complete document within 85 sheets.
  3. Use a stable surface, align sheets against the correct guide and slide the punch handle as instructed. Empty the waste container periodically.
  4. Use the matching ProClick pattern for replacement pages. The selected spine opens and closes by hand and allows 360-degree page movement.
  5. Confirm operating and storage fit, household agreement, availability and the final cost of both items. Keep the folder until the full system is ready.

This applies if…

  • You want to bind ordinary loose Letter sheets into a personal working pack that can be reopened and folded back.

The answer changes if…

  • Your paper format, media or complete stack differs, or the punch and matching supplies do not fit your space or budget.

What to check in your own setup
  • The 85-sheet capacity applies to the selected half-inch spine and 20 lb paper. Different paper, thicker covers or another spine size need their own check.
  • Reopening and full page rotation do not establish how smoothly a particular score turns, its tear resistance or its stability on a music stand.
  • Prices were observed on October 5, 2026. Final tax and delivery charges were not checked.
