Read past the speed count

Noel June Bennett has a booked bicycle service to prepare for. The chain on this job is a SRAM 12-speed road Flattop D1. The part order needs its connecting link, and “12-speed” appears on more than one PowerLock.

SRAM’s chain manual makes the distinction by family. Eagle PowerLocks work with Eagle-stamped chains. PLCK-D1 works with Road Flattop D1 and E1 chains. For Noel’s road D1 job, the road connector is the choice. The matching speed count does not make an Eagle link suitable.

The silver road part is 00.2518.036.003, sold by SRAM as a kit of four. The Amazon listing checked on October 5, 2026 matched that part number at $17 new, shipped by Amazon and sold by Bicycle Addiction. Its generic one-item field did not spell out the number of connectors. Noel will confirm the original package and quantity, then check the final total against the $230 personal budget.

When this does not matter

An appropriate unused connector is already available, or a qualified service provider is supplying the matched part.

The practical fix

  1. Identify the chain family and match the stamped chain and connector, using SRAM’s current compatibility map for the actual drivetrain. This choice covers a 12-speed road Flattop D1 chain. Do not substitute an Eagle or T-Type link. An already suitable unused connector or qualified service remains a valid alternative.
  2. Confirm original SRAM silver part 00.2518.036.003, its packaging and quantity. SRAM specifies a four-pack, while the checked retail listing did not explicitly state connector count. Check the final price including charges.
  3. Use a new PowerLock once. Remove an old one with chain-link pliers and discard it. SRAM lists Park MLP-1.2 for opening and closing.
  4. Identify the actual derailleur and follow its current chain and drivetrain manuals for sizing, orientation and routing. Only for a confirmed non-Cage-Lock derailleur, use the smallest cog and route through the pulleys above the cage tab. Do not transfer that route to Cage Lock. Follow the road Flattop diagram, with the flat edge away from the chainring and cassette.
  5. For the manual’s plier installation method, bring the chain ends together, fit and press the connector halves together, verify alignment and engagement, then lock with approved pliers. Incorrect sizing or connection can cause a crash. Use qualified installation if needed.
  6. For later care, use biodegradable cleaner, rinse with water, dry and apply chain lubricant. Avoid acidic or alkaline solvents, and do not soak or store the chain in cleaner. Noel has permission to use the workshop’s cleaner, water and lubricant.

This applies if…

  • You are selecting a new connector for an identified SRAM 12-speed road Flattop D1 chain and will follow the actual drivetrain’s installation requirements.

The answer changes if…

  • The chain is Eagle, T-Type or still unidentified, or the job requires other chain or drivetrain work.

What to check in your own setup
  • Matching a connector does not establish chain condition or length, or replace the applicable installation procedure.
  • This recommendation does not approve Eagle or T-Type substitution, connector reuse or a completed repair.
  • Match the SRAM 12s PowerLock listing to model CN-PLCK-D1, 00.2518.036.003. Variant: Silver road Flattop PowerLock, confirm original four-pack quantity.
