The bowl Felix wanted to keep
Felix liked soup with properly crusty bread, and he liked the wide bowl he used to prepare ingredients. Put that bowl on his kitchen scale, though, and the readout disappeared underneath it. Each new addition sent his attention back to the same awkward spot.
His smaller prep bowl gave him a perfectly reasonable way to keep the working scale. He could weigh ingredients there and transfer them. He usually preferred keeping an object in service, so a replacement would need to give him something he actually wanted: a readable display while he added ingredients directly to the wide bowl.
A display that comes forward
The OXO Good Grips 11 lb stainless steel scale caught his attention because its display pulls away from the base. OXO designed that movement to keep bowls and plates from shadowing the readout. The current model is 11214800. Its zero function lets you set the displayed weight back to zero before the next ingredient.
That made it a sensible choice for Felix to consider. The bowl still had to sit securely, with its weight carried by the platform alone. It could not rest against the counter or the display. He would also need space on his level work surface to pull the screen forward and reach the controls. A pull-out display has a finite reach, so he would check those points with his bowl before relying on the arrangement.
The bowl still counts
Felix included the bowl in his load calculation. A 1 lb bowl with 3 lb of ingredients would put 4 lb on the scale, below its 11 lb capacity. Pressing zero between additions would leave every ounce physically on the platform. The limit covers the bowl and everything added to it.
OXO specifies display increments of 1 g or 0.1 oz. Those numbers describe the steps in the readout. They do not establish an accuracy tolerance.
He chose the OXO design for his next scale, subject to the bowl check. Before use, he would follow its current package instructions for power, setup and care. For now, the smaller bowl could carry on doing its job. He left the wide bowl beside his recipe notebook.
When this does not matter
Your present scale is already readable with the bowl, or you are happy weighing in a smaller container and transferring.
The practical fix
- Choose the OXO Good Grips 11 lb stainless scale, model 11214800, if a movable display addresses your bowl obstruction.
- Check that the bowl sits securely on the platform without touching the counter or display, and that the extended screen and controls remain accessible on a stable level surface.
- Count the empty bowl and all planned ingredients toward the 11 lb capacity. Zeroing between additions does not reduce that load.
- Follow the current package instructions for power, setup and care before use. If weighing in a smaller bowl and transferring suits you, keep the working scale.
This applies if…
- You want to add ingredients in the same bowl, and that bowl hides your current scale display.
The answer changes if…
- The bowl cannot sit securely, the extended controls remain obstructed, or the bowl and ingredients exceed the load limit.

What to check in your own setup
- The pull-out design cannot guarantee clearance for every bowl.
- The stated 1 g and 0.1 oz increments do not establish accuracy or a recipe result.
