The smaller number on the page
Olive likes a rice bowl with plenty of crisp vegetables. Cooking for herself, she wants a small batch of plain white rice alongside them. Her two pans work perfectly well. She is considering her first rice cooker, and the three-cup capacity label leaves her with a question about the other end of the range.
How little can she put in it? For the US Zojirushi NS-LGC05, the manual gives a range of 0.5 to 3 supplied cups of raw short- or medium-grain white rice. The menu is WHITE RICE/MIXED, and the water scale is WHITE/MIXED. That includes the half-cup batch she has in mind.
The Stainless Black model is NS-LGC05XB. Its documented minimum is the reason Olive keeps it on her list. The maximum printed on a box cannot, by itself, tell a small-batch cook how little is allowed.
Room for the cooker and its care
She likes a clear worktop, which makes another appliance worth thinking through. Her heat-resistant counter has room for the cooker, its opening lid and escaping steam, away from walls, shelves and other appliances. Its vents must stay clear. The US unit uses 120 V, 60 Hz power and needs an outlet rated at least 15 A, with no other device sharing that outlet.
She will check that the package is complete, including the provided inner pan, inner lid, steam cap, rice cup and spatula, and wash the specified parts before the first use. Zojirushi also lists a spatula holder among the accessories. During use, hands stay clear of hot parts and steam. Afterward, she will cancel operation, unplug it and let it cool before cleaning by hand with soft materials. The parts do not go in the dishwasher. Electrical repairs belong with qualified service.
The regular new Amazon offer checked on October 5, 2026 was $151.99, sold and shipped by Amazon.com. Olive will check the final total, including tax and shipping, against her $320 personal budget.
She chooses the NS-LGC05XB for the small batch she wants. Her pan remains available until the cooker is ready, and keeping the pan method would still be a reasonable choice. Half of the supplied cup is the quantity she intends to start with.
When this does not matter
Your owned pan method already suits you and you prefer to keep using it.
The practical fix
- Check the exact US NS-LGC05XB and complete package, final price, steam clearance and power requirements described above.
- For plain short- or medium-grain white rice, measure half of the supplied rice cup, rinse, use the matching WHITE/MIXED water line and select WHITE RICE/MIXED. Follow the manual’s start and serving instructions.
- Keep clear of steam and hot parts. Cancel operation, unplug and cool before hand-cleaning after use.
This applies if…
- You want a first cooker for at least half a supplied rice cup of raw short- or medium-grain white rice and can provide the complete US setup.
The answer changes if…
- You need less than half a supplied rice cup, select SUSHI, use another grain or measuring system, or cannot provide suitable placement and power.

What to check in your own setup
- The chosen half-cup quantity is a personal batch preference. Cooked yield, texture and timing can vary, and no standard serving size is promised.
- This recommendation makes no claim about cooking speed, energy savings or long warm-holding use.
- The observed offer is dated. Final tax, shipping and future price remain to be checked.
