Six ways a good purchase
goes quietly wrong.
Every story on this site turns on one detail. Grouped together, those details fall into a few patterns. Learn the pattern and you can spot the catch on products we have never written about.
The number on the box is only half the spec.
Watts, cups, sheets, sides of the paper. A headline number is true, and it still answers a different question from yours.
02Turn one feature on. Another one quietly turns off.
Two features on the box does not mean two features at once. Sometimes the mode you want switches off the one you were counting on.
03Same brand, same shape, wrong family.
Refills, heads, rolls, links and blanks. The logo matches, the size looks right, and the part still belongs to another family.
04It works. Just not where you planned to put it.
A socket on the wrong wall, a sink on the wrong side, a pan that is too small for the plate. The room decides more than the spec sheet admits.
05The connection you assumed is not the one in the manual.
One HDMI socket, no Ethernet port, an input that only exists with the right driver. The route between your devices decides the purchase.
06Sometimes the hidden detail is good news.
A scan mode that stitches two halves, a clip that replaces pins, a buttonhole that sews itself. Not every catch is a warning.
