THE CATCH · WHERE IT LIVES

It works. Just not where you planned to put it.

A socket on the wrong wall, a sink on the wrong side, a pan that is too small for the plate. The room decides more than the spec sheet admits.

Plenty of good products fail at the last step, in the actual room. The mirror needs power where the stool is. The bidet needs warm water from the sink. The watering valve needs pressure that a rain barrel cannot give. The voltage changes at the airport.

These stories start with the place, not the product. Someone had a counter, a shower, a dressing table or a trip in mind, and the useful detail was whether the product was allowed to live there.

How to spot it before you buy

  1. Check what the product needs from its location: power, water pressure, a hot supply, clearance or a flat surface.
  2. Look for use-location permissions in the manual, such as shower use, outdoor use or voltage range.
  3. Measure the object that has to fit inside or on top of it, such as a pan base, a bowl or a pot.
  4. If you travel with it, read the voltage on the label, not the listing.
