THE CATCH · SAME BRAND, WRONG FAMILY
Same brand, same shape, wrong family.
Refills, heads, rolls, links and blanks. The logo matches, the size looks right, and the part still belongs to another family.
Consumables are where brand families quietly split. A brush head can share a logo and a round shape with yours and still fit a different handle. A chain link can share a speed count and still belong to another chain system. A roll can fit the printer and still lack the second color you wanted.
The people in these stories already owned something that worked. The question was which exact refill, accessory or part would keep it working, and which near-identical one would not.
How to spot it before you buy
- Find the exact model number of the thing you already own, usually on a label or in the original manual.
- Match the refill or part against the manufacturer's compatibility list, not against the product photo.
- Watch for family names inside a brand, such as a system name, a series or a generation.
- Check whether the material itself has a requirement, such as a coating or a printer type, before buying the machine that uses it.

Choose the Park Tool CC-4.2 for a SRAM Flattop chain. Park Tool directs CC-3.2 owners to that model, and SRAM lists it for chain-wear measurement.
Anika's CC-3.2 chain checker is not the gauge for the SRAM Flattop chain she has to inspect. The CC-4.2 is, though it cannot read SRAM's exact 0.8% line.
