THE CATCH · THE CONNECTION YOU ASSUMED

The connection you assumed is not the one in the manual.

One HDMI socket, no Ethernet port, an input that only exists with the right driver. The route between your devices decides the purchase.

Electronics rarely fail on their own. They fail at the joins. A projector has one HDMI socket and two devices want it. A mesh unit has no Ethernet port for the cable you already ran. A record player can drive headphones only because it has its own output and volume control.

These stories trace the route from one device to the next. The answer usually came from a single line in a connection diagram or an input list.

How to spot it before you buy

  1. Draw the chain from source to output, one cable or wireless hop at a time.
  2. Count the physical ports you need against the ports the product actually has.
  3. Check whether a feature needs an app, an account, Wi-Fi or a specific driver to work.
  4. Confirm that the connection works without the phone or computer you would rather not leave running.
